Background:
Founded as a grammar school for girls in 1903 and voluntary aided since 1951, St Saviour's and St Olave's belongs to a group of schools dating back to the Elizabethan times. Situated in an inner city area in one of the poorest boroughs in the country, the original building has been modernised and extended several times, providing much improved facilities, especially in the key areas of English and technology. There is also a sports/assembly hall, playing fields and a pavilion, a chapel/stage, six well-equipped science laboratories and a photographic darkroom. Sixth form accommodation has just been doubled with the addition of a brand new building. The curriculum is taught in a co-operative and happy atmosphere that encourages each girl to fulfill her potential. Extra support is provided for those who are more able or who are experiencing special educational needs. Extra-curricular activities include a debating society, classical studies, Latin, Spanish, computing, aerobics, drama, technology, chess and photography. An annual arts evening celebrates pupils' musical, dramatic and dance achievements. A large selection of instrumental lessons is offered and there are choirs, ensembles and a band. There are also links with theatres and opera companies and pupils have performed at Southwark Cathedral, The Globe and the Southbank Centre. There is a very successful work experience programme for Year 10 girls including a university summer school, and a chance to do work experience in Germany. A range of school journeys includes a ski trip to Austria, visits to France and regular theatre and museum trips. The school has been awarded Specialist Science College status in September 2004. The ethos of the school is based on mutual respect and care. The school has a great tradition and a commitment to Christian values underpinning all it sets out to do.
