Background:
Opened in 1927, Sudbourne Primary is a community school serving pupils from a 'wide' range of backgrounds in the centre of Brixton. The 'limited' space is used 'as effectively as possible' with a pond and wildlife garden, landscaped gardens, including an international bed, and 'lots' of seats and benches. Sudbourne puts a strong emphasis on the arts and extra-curricular clubs include maypole dancing, steel pan playing, drama, French and tennis coaching. In school, children are taught recorders, steel pans and have been visited by the Pavillion Opera Company who performed in Italian. The school has an 'exciting' link with the Royal Academy and participates in the 'Chance to Dance' which was initiated by the Royal Ballet and the Dance Company of Harlem. Sudbourne parents 'show great initiative' and the Parent-Teachers' Association has provided the school with 10 wooden benches, a library computer and a second hand music hut. A group who run the school's Saturday morning football training club launched a borough-wide football league and annual five-a-side tournament which has been running since 1995. Other community links include a weekly exchange with a local special school, whose pupils join pottery classes at Sudbourne, and housing Guides, Beavers and Scouts on the premises. Each year, the school raises money for charity. Recently, pupils were proud to support a local Streatham charity for the homeless, the Lifeboats' Insitution, the Poppy Appeal, Comic Relief and Operation Christmas.
