Background:
Townsend Primary School was named after its benefactor, John Townsend, who was a local minister. The building originally provided an education for deaf and dumb children. It was closed in the 1930s, re-opening in 1951 to meet local demand for school places. It is a three-storey building with two halls on the middle and top floors. In October 2002, a new information and communication technology suite was opened which is located on the top juniors floor. It is a one and a half-form entry county primary school for infant and junior children with two part-time nursery classes. The school's physical education programme includes large and small apparatus work, music and movement, games and swimming as is laid out in the national curriculum orders. The school also takes part in Southwark's annual festival of sport, which offers a range of sporting activities for a class of children for one day. It has several sports teams, such as football and rugby. The school aims to provide an attractive, safe and caring centre of excellence, where adults and children value themselves and each other and to create a quality, stimulating and safe environment where each child can achieve their potential and enjoy success.
