Background:

Founded as girls' grammar in 1919; housed in characterful buildings, the former manor of Highams (built 1768) in beautiful, extensive grounds designed by Humphrey Repton. Situated on the edge of Epping Forest and to the west of the borough of Redbridge; catchment area includes the whole of Redbridge and a small part of Waltham Forest and Essex. New buildings and refurbishment include an art and technology centre, as well as extra laboratories and classrooms. A four-bay sports hall, with dance and aerobics studio, in summer 2007. All pupils undertake work-experience and community placements. Academic standards are high, and other strengths include art, music and sport. Close links with Redbridge Music School; individual and team successes at county and national level are regular feature in sport. A wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered. Girls are 'encouraged to contribute positively to the school and to the wider community'. Fundraising activities are impressive; sixth form is described as particularly vibrant. Over-subscribed, with more than seven applications per place. DfES achievement award (2000). Ethos: 'Girls are encouraged to make the most of the many opportunities open to them and to realise their potential. There is a friendly and lively atmosphere. Relationships are excellent at all levels. The girls are supportive of one another and enjoy whole-school events such as the house drama festival'.
