Background:

St Bartholomew's is a Church of England school which was founded in 1815. The present building, built in 1996, is set in 'very attractive, well-kept' grounds in 'a very mixed locality best described as 'fringe inner city''. The majority of pupils come from the local area and are grouped in mixed age classes with the exception of Year 2 where pupils of similar age are taught together. Twenty-six per cent of pupils are from ethnic groups and approximately 15 per cent come from homes where English is not the first language. The school has no nursery. Its grounds have won numerous awards and a 'Millennial Garden' is due to open there in March 2000. The school has a 'strong musical and dramatic tradition' and aims to 'foster an appreciation of aesthetic beauty through first hand experience in art, music, dance and literature'. It holds plays, festivals and concerts almost every term and its choir sings in local old people's homes and luncheon clubs. The school has 'spacious and attractive' playground areas for physical activities in the summer months. There is 'very strong' parental support for all aspects of school life. The school has strong links with the parish church and aims 'to exemplify a partnership between the local authority and the Church to serve the community' . In 1998/99 the school supported the Derwent Challenge infant cot death appeal, the Marie Curie Society and NCH. The school's main aims include: 'the promotion of high standards of excellence, through stimulating each child's sense of curiosity and wonder about the world'; 'The fostering of the love of knowledge for its own sake'; and 'the promotion among pupils of values of committment, self-reliance and responsibility'.
