Background:

St Martin-in-the-Fields High School for Girls was founded in 1699 thus it has a tradition and experience of education that extends over 300 years. In the mid-17th century, its Church, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Society for Promoting Christian knowledge (SPCK) were headed by radical thinkers who believed that a school should be provided to educate the girls of the Parish. The consensus then was that only boys required a formal education. The school offers a modern curriculum for all its pupils with an emphasis on progress, achievement and independent learning. The school is committed to giving pupils the opportunity to explore and study the important role religion plays in their own lives and in society. The PE department provides the opportunity for pupils to develop their skills in sport and dance. The school has a music department with its own recording studio. The instruments currently on offer include: piano, violin, guitar, classical and jazz flute, steel pans and drum kit. The school aims to providing excellent teaching amd well-ordered classes, requiring high standards of behaviour. It aims to foster the pupil's spiritual development. The school celebrates all forms of achievement particularly promoting an awareness of the potential of women in society, and aims to prepare girls for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
