Background:
St Michael's first opened in 1960. It is a four-entry school for both boys and girls with an intake of 120 pupils each year. All people are interviewed before they are accepted. The school has excellent resources and modern facilities to equip pupils for the 21st century. There are four full-equipped computer rooms, in addition to computers in many classrooms; three design and technology rooms and two food technology workshops. It has five modern science laboratories. It now has modern, space-saving and efficient facilities available in its suite of science laboratories. It has a new IBM business and enterprise centre; two demountable classrooms, new toilets and a new reception area. It has its own chapel, a well-stocked library with a full-time librarian, and a specialist careers' resource area. It is a successful, well-ordered and caring Catholic comprehensive school. It respects and values all faiths, beliefs and culture and welcomes students who wish to share in a Christian education strengthened by the teaching of the Catholic Church. St Michael's School exists to serve its local Catholic community. It promotes Christian values by serving others, being tolerant, prayful, spiritual and forgiving. In this way, it creates a happy atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of everyone is recognised, developed and safeguarded, where mutual trust, equality, respect and support are fostered.
